Frequently Asked Questions
What's special about SuperFeast?
At SuperFeast, we think about health differently. We aren't interested in fads, and we turn to nature for guidance and healing. We believe that health starts in the home and that vitality is everyone's birthright. That plants and fungi are allies on our journey towards our utmost potential. We really love tonic herbs and medicinal mushrooms. We take them every day. We fell in love with them, they transformed us, and we decided to share them with the world. We partner with diligent and ethical people in communities that care about the quality and integrity of the herbs. We extract with care. We use premium packaging to ensure the herbs have longevity. And we love what we do.
We also respect and honour the lineage of Daoist herbalism that has provided us with a path to walk and a map of the body/mind/soul, both energetically and physically, which has allowed us to expand our consciousness. We continue to study and learn from this tradition and are incredibly grateful for the many Masters, gurus, teachers, students, scholars, alchemists, somanauts and adventurers who have contributed to our understanding of this wisdom.
What is a tonic herb?
Tonic herbs were first mentioned in Emperor Shen Nong's Classic of Herbal Medicine, the Shen Nong Ben Cao Jing, around 2,000 years ago. This text (also known as the Divine Farmer's Materia Medica) was a culmination of thousands of years of traditional herbal wisdom from the many healers in ancient China. It may or may not have been written by a man with a see-through belly. The lore is fascinating! Many well-known herbs feature in Shen Nong's text, and he classifies herbs according to three distinct categories:
Superior herbs (also known as imperial herbs) - these are the herbs that can be consumed daily with benefits accumulating over time. They were used daily by the wisest and wealthiest people, including the Emperors. These are the ones we love to work with. We call them tonic herbs. Or Daoist tonic herbs, if we're being specific, though some Ayurvedic and Western herbs are also tonic.
Regular herbs - these are the herbs that can treat the ailing. These herbs should not be used for an extended period as there is a potential for long-term negative side effects.
Inferior herbs - these herbs are primarily considered to be toxic. Inferior herbs should only be used for a short period to get a powerful and fast result when treating a serious illness acutely.
Tonic herbs are not a trend. Their medicinal use is grounded in thousands of years of empirical evidence. As the safety and efficacy of tonic herbs are beginning to be acknowledged by modern science, we are simply confirming the effects ancient herbalists monitored over thousands of years of practice.
By definition, a tonic herb:
- must not cause harm or place additional stress on the body
- must promote healing within the body via a non-specific action
- must be adaptive in nature, assisting the body to overcome any physical, psychological or environmental stressors.
What is a medicinal mushroom?
Medicinal mushrooms (still technically herbs!) are unmatched in their ability to build immunity and adaptability within the body and are among some of the world's most prized tonic herbs (see above).
Some famous medicinal mushrooms are also great culinary mushrooms - think shiitake - but many are difficult to consume in their raw form. For this reason, they were (and continue to be) extracted, to maximise their medicinal value. Different extraction methods yield different compounds - see our FAQs on extracting herbs for more details. Generally, a mushroom extract will provide a more concentrated and cost-effective way of consuming the mushrooms (compared to purchasing the ground mushroom and extracting it yourself). At SuperFeast, it takes 10 kilograms of dried mushroom to produce 1 kilogram of medicinal mushroom extract powder.
In the wild, medicinal mushrooms are tree-dwelling. Many species tend to favour the wood of the particular trees, and the trees, in turn, lend the mushrooms some of their medicinal compounds. For example, Chaga thrives on the very medicinal and magical birch tree; we sustainably source our Chaga wild from birch forests in China. Our reishi we grow cultivated Dì Dào (地道) on wild oak due to the limited availability of wild reishi. Oak is another unique medicinal tree, and choosing oak-grown reishi allows us to access that tree-medicine via the mushrooms. Choosing only wood-grown mushrooms enables us to supply you with a product with the most robust and adaptive medicinal profile possible. Our intention and focus for all our SuperFeast products is to provide the best quality, most potent herbs grown in a sustainable way, aligned with nature.
Many other companies, nearly all who occupy the market today, supply medicinal mushrooms that are grown on a cereal medium, usually a grain such as rice or oats. It's cheap, but it produces poor quality mushrooms. Some argue that these products are higher in beta-glucans and polysaccharides. We recommend trying them for yourself. We have found them to be less effective and to contain less Qi than properly grown mushrooms. There are some great companies out there who are doing outstanding work. If you're not purchasing SuperFeast products, ask your mushroom supplier how they grow their mushrooms, on what medium, and how they extract, and that will give you a sense of the type of quality you are getting.
Do you sell magic mushrooms?
Medicinal mushrooms are magic in the way that they allow their medicine to unfold within the body; however, they are NOT magic mushrooms (the psychedelic kind Timothy Leary was into). A super cool and exciting field of research is emerging that suggests that these varieties of mushrooms can be beneficial medicinally. And obviously, these mushrooms have a rich and sacred history, especially in Mesoamerica. We sponsor Mind Medicine Australia to support this research. At SuperFeast, we’re interested in Daoist Tonic Herbalism, so this is what we place our focus on.
What is the difference between a herbal extract and a dried herb?
We often get confused customers asking why they can access dried herbs so much cheaper than our extracts. We understand the confusion! When you're purchasing a herb, unless you plan to extract it yourself (and we do highly recommend getting into home herbalism, as many amazing medicinal products can be crafted in the home), generally, you're better off purchasing an extract or tincture as you're going to use a small amount to get the most potent medicinal effects. Especially if the plant is very tough/fibrous (like ashwagandha, reishi, chaga, etc.), extracts are far more efficient and effective. Your body cannot digest the tough material that these herbs are composed of.
To extract means to pull or to draw out. Applying this concept to plant materials such as tonic herbs and medicinal mushrooms essentially describes the process used to obtain the compounds responsible for the herb's therapeutic profile. The resultant extract is generally more bio-available for the end-user than the original herb.
These compounds are generally extracted using a solvent such as water or alcohol. We use both of these mediums to extract our herbs, singularly and together. Each method is beneficial, and its use is dependent on the particular active constituent/s we wish to extract.
Alcohol is used to draw out the fat-soluble components of the herbs, such as bitter compounds and alkaloids. Water is used to obtain the herbs' immune-boosting starches and proteins, tannins, astringents, etc. Some herbs contain active constituents that are both fat- and water-soluble; this is where we bring in the dual-extraction method (see What is a dual-extract? FAQ). Both water and alcohol are used to acquire the herb's full medicinal profile with a dual-extract. When extracting our herbs, we use quality spring water and organic non-GMO rice alcohol; this ensures a product that is both full-bodied and potent.
To simplify: If you've ever had a herbal tincture from the naturopath, you're taking an alcohol extract; if you've ever boiled herbs in hot water for a long time or even made a herbal tea, you've had a water extract. Those sweet tinctures you take sometimes are often made from glycerine, which is an alcohol-free way of getting some of those fat-soluble compounds. Don't worry about the use of alcohol in our products - we evaporate it off, which is one of the benefits of an extract powder instead of a tincture. No alcohol residue!
We deliberately choose to only work with herbal extract powders instead of selling un-extracted ground dried herbs. The basis of a herbal extract is a dried herb (fruiting body, root, stem or flower, or animal part) that is usually ground or chopped to increase the available surface area for extraction.
We use extracts for their convenience and medicinal potency - a little goes a long way. While we believe herbalism is a craft that belongs to the people of the world, not to pharmaceutical companies, we also find many of our customers don't have time to produce their own herbal extracts in this modern age. However, we do highly recommend exploring DIY extracts if you're keen! There are some excellent books and courses out there on home herbalism.
Our commercially produced extracts are extracted at a 10:1 ratio; 10kgs of the herb is reduced into a 1kg concentrate, then dried and sifted to make a uniform powder, which is packaged here in Mullumbimby or on our TGA facility in Sydney. Our herbs have a 2-year shelf life and are not heat sensitive; you can add them to hot or cold foods and beverages.
We wholeheartedly believe the kitchen is the heart of the home and feel herbs extracted in this way can be easily integrated into the daily diet. Traditionally tonic herbs were incorporated in a similar way, primarily taken in teas and culinary dishes throughout the day. Start small - extracts are concentrated and potent, and you don't need a lot to manifest a powerful shift in your energetic and physical reality.
What is a dual-extract?
A dual-extract is a method of processing a herb to make it more bioavailable to the human or animal consuming it. Both water and alcohol are used to acquire the herb's full medicinal profile with a dual-extract. When extracting our herbs, we use quality spring water and organic non-GMO rice alcohol; this ensures a full-bodied and potent product. Water (also known as the universal solvent) extracts the water-soluble components of the herb (makes sense!). Alcohol is a more selective solvent; it extracts the fat-soluble compounds and other compounds like the bitter constituents of the plant, the alkaloids and essential oils, etc. Many herbs only need water extraction - and some prefer dual-extraction. You'll see which type of extract we've used on the product pages of our individual herbs and blends.
What is Miron glass?
Miron glass only allows ultraviolet (UV) and infrared (IR) light to penetrate. In the Daoist and Yogic traditions, violet light is thought to express the highest vibrational frequency of all the colours (720 – 770 billion Hertz), corresponding precisely to the vibration frequency of our central nervous system. Research shows that products stored in Miron glass are exceptionally well-preserved, enriched, and protected against degradation for up to three years. How’s that for longevity! We highly encourage you to save and reuse or repurpose your Miron glass jars.
Who is Mason Taylor?
Mason is the sole owner and CEO of SuperFeast. He is a tonic herbalist, passionate health nerd, and co-host of the SuperFeast podcast. Mason started SuperFeast in 2011, from humble beginnings in his mum's garage. He has remained independent and is proud to offer these powerful herbs to the international community.
How do I contact SuperFeast?
You can call us (yes, it will be answered by a real person from our Mullumbimby office) - 1300 769 500. Otherwise, shoot us an email team@superfeast.com.au or try our social media accounts @superfeast on Instagram or via Facebook.
Are your products keto/FODMAP-friendly/paleo etc?
In our opinion, herbs are as about as paleo as it gets. They're ancient medicines, and they've been used for millennia to help humans and animals stay vital. So yeah, our herbs are paleo. We don't use grain starches or fillers, so you can be sure our products are grain-free, and while we use organic rice alcohol to extract our dual-extracts, most paleo folk consider that a non-issue. Decide for yourself.
Our capsules utilise bamboo extract and organic non-GMO sweet potato (ashwagandha capsules) to enhance the slip factor required for encapsulation - these are the most natural excipients we can source, and they're really high quality. No crappy GMO cornstarch for us.
As a general rule, the dose of our products is so small that it will not affect any special diet that you are on. That said, some people are extra sensitive and would be wise to avoid glucose, FODMAPs, lectins, etc. It's best to confirm with your practitioner or expert in your particular diet if you have any concerns about adding our products to your routine.
Products containing berry/fruit extracts (e.g. goji, longan) - Beauty Blend, SHEN, etc - may contain FODMAPs and small amounts of glucose. Again, your level of sensitivity will determine how appropriate these products are for you.
Are your products gluten-free?
Yes, all our products are gluten-free.
Are your products vegan?
The only non-vegan products we sell are SHEN (pearl powder) and Deer Antler extract. The rest of our range is vegan.
Do you standardise your products/test for active constituents?
We do not standardise our products, nor do we focus on isolated compounds. We believe in the medicinal value of the whole herb. While it's common for a herb to become famous for a specific compound, we believe that science is only just starting to scrape the surface of what is possible when we align ourselves with our plant allies. There are many unidentified and likely potent compounds in many herbs; we don't see a reason not to trust in nature's intelligence in packaging them up in a herb.
We use traditional extraction methods to ensure that the full range of medicinal compounds and energetic qualities are extracted from our herbs.
We feel this results in a potent product that is just as nature intended. We never synthetically isolate, manipulate or standardise our herbs for particular active constituents.
How pure are your herbs? Do you test them?
We don’t just sell these herbs, we take these herbs, we give them to our families, we give them to our friends. Therefore we only focus on producing products of the highest quality and purity. This is our mission, burning passion and deep desire with SuperFeast. To ensure this quality is upheld, our herbs go through a series of rigorous testing.
We test all our products, in both China and Australia. Every ingredient must meet stringent quality standards. These quality standards are part of good manufacturing practices (GMP), which apply to all TGA-listed medicines in Australia, as well as our own standards around quality and sourcing.
We obtain Certificates of Analysis (CoAs) for all our products from our manufacturer in China and/or our TGA registration process (if the product is listed with the TGA). We also obtain fingerprint chromatography for each of our herbs; this ensures each herb is correctly identified as the species we want to work with (eg. to ensure our red reishi is Ganoderma lucidum, not some other species).
In Australia, we test at two TGA approved facilities for the following: herbicides, organochlorine (OC) pesticides, carbamates, organophosphate (OP) pesticides, synthetic pyrethroids, fungicides, etc, heavy metals (lead, copper, mercury, etc), yeasts, moulds, bacteria, and other microbials.
How are your herbs packed?
SuperFeast tonic herbs are packed by hand, with love, in our Mullumbimby warehouse by an epic bunch of (super) humans or in our TGA facility in Sydney. We use ultraviolet Miron glass jars to store our herbs, this preserves the integrity of the herb by protecting it from the entire visible light spectrum.
Our herbs are also available in bulk Kraft bags for those of you who wish to refill or share a larger volume of herbs with your families (and save some money). Our kraft bags are made of mix of linear low-density polyethylene (LLDPE) (no BPA), metalised polyester (MET PET foil lining) and kraft paper.
We have trialled several more sustainable options however we have found that materials made of natural fibres have a shorter shelf life than our herbs. The journey continues!
SuperFeast herbs are packed by weight, not volume and each herb has its own unique profile. Some of the herbs are dense, while others are lighter. This may result in a variance of the space the herbs can occupy in each jar. For example, Neural Nectar and Beauty Blend, are denser in nature and will settle at a lower volume in your Miron jar or Kraft bag. Whereas Astragalus and Lion's Mane are fluffy and light, and will therefore take up more surface area, which results in their volume appearing fuller in your Miron jar or Kraft bag.
How are your herbal extracts dried and powdered?
After extracting our herbs in either water or water and alcohol (for a dual-extraction), the concentrated liquid extract is dried using an ultra-high-speed spray dryer. During this process, the herbal liquid concentrate is atomised into fine droplets, which are thrown radially into a moving stream of hot gas. The temperature of the droplets is immediately increased and fine droplets become dried instantaneously.
The whole drying process is completed in just a few seconds, ensuring herbal potency is retained at the maximum level. In the spray drying process, heat and mass transfer while drying occurs in the air, protecting the vapour films surrounding the extract, preventing it from being damaged by the heat. This protective envelope of vapour keeps the particle at saturation temperature. As long as the particle does not become “bone-dry”, evaporation is still taking place and the temperature of the solids will not approach the dryer temperature. This is why many heat-sensitive products can be spray-dried easily at relatively high temperatures. The herbal extracts are then sifted through a fine mesh, to achieve a uniform consistency to the final product.
Do you offer samples?
At this time, we do not have samples available. We have not been able to find a sustainable way to offer samples that also preserves the quality of our herbs.
How much should I take? What's the best dose?
Generally, we recommend taking the herbs daily in small doses, to begin with. This allows you to develop an understanding and acknowledgment of how the herbs are unfolding their medicinal magic for you. Follow the dosage instructions on the package, or start with 1/8 - 1/2 teaspoon per day, adjusting the dose if you feel it necessary within your unique body system.
Doses can be taken as high as two teaspoons per day, however, most people find their sweet spot with 1/2 to one teaspoon per product, per day. We call this sweet spot your "lifestyle dose". We don't recommend taking more than two tablespoons of herbs a day. These extracts are potent, and you want to take care not to overload the body with too much of a good thing.
Keep in mind, dosage is very personal. Some people require larger doses - larger bodies, stronger constitutions - while others need smaller doses - smaller bodies, more sensitive constitutions. Your body will let you know if you need more or less as you experiment, and we encourage you to trust your body’s innate wisdom and intuition.
The flavour profile of the herb/blend will also influence your dosage range and often dictate how high you can take your dose. Listen to this guide as it is very useful in finding what is appropriate for you.
A dose taken in the morning before a meal is usually well-received, however, you can take the herbs at any time that suits your daily flow and lifestyle. A warm JING is a wonderful way to welcome in your day, while Reishi is a beautiful nighttime tonic, assisting a restful night's sleep.
Building your dose up over a couple of weeks is a really lovely practice and allows the space for awareness and understanding to develop in regards to how your body, mind, and spirit are receiving the herbs.
If you would like to learn a little more about how to use these beautiful tonic herbs, click here to listen to our SuperFeast 101 podcast. Mason answers all our commonly asked questions. An insightful and informative listen.
If you are trying to convert an mg dose to teaspoons, we usually find that 500mg is equal to about 1/10th of a teaspoon, and 2500 mg equals about 1/2 tsp.
Can I combine/mix my herbs together?
The tonic herbs work in synergy with one another and were traditionally formulated to carry a certain intention and energetic within the body.
In this regard they are well suited to be taken in combinations aligned to your individual intention and needs.
Think about how the flavours and energetics of the herbs work when experimenting with combinations. As a general rule, we don't recommend working with more than a couple of products at a time. Go slow and let your body adjust to the tonic herb magic!
What time of day should I take my herbs?
Remember, first and foremost, herbs only work if you take them! So if there is a time you will be guaranteed to take your herbs (first thing in the morning, when you get home from a shift etc) then that is the best time!
However, as with all things Daoist, there are considerations around timing. Generally, we feel it's best/safest to take your herbs after some water, before or with your breakfast, in the morning hours. This is the time of day that the body is open to receiving nourishment and any effects you notice throughout the day can be tracked.
Some herbs are to be taken 2 or more times a day - in this case, take your herbs before each meal breakfast, lunch and dinner.
Other herbs, like reishi, SHEN, or ashwagandha, work well at nighttime. We love a nightcap of reishi or SHEN with hot plant milk and maybe a little cinnamon or cacao.
Others love to work with the organ clock, taking Jing herbs at Bladder or Kidney time (between 3 and 7 pm) - a great time to take JING can be in that afternoon slump time around 3 or 4 pm.
As with all things, there are many nuances and personal preferences to explore. Gentle experiments with small doses at different times of day can be helpful for you to discover your personal sweet spot.
When will I see results?
This is very subjective as we all have unique body systems, so there is no cut-and-dry answer. When you experience results will depend on your level of internal awareness, constitutional sensitivity, and current health condition.
Benefits may be felt immediately or it may take anywhere from a couple of weeks to a month for you to feel the shifts within your body. We’re all about consistent action taken with intent, with space left for your health to unfold in a way that is unique to your own individual life path.
Tonic herbalism is all about consistency, with benefits accumulating over time. Longevity in the practice cultivates longevity in the body, and as long as you are taking the herbs they will be working their magic for you. We recommend consuming one or more of our products regularly for at least 30-100 days to really allow the medicine to unfold within your system.
How long will my product last?
How long your product lasts will depend on the amount you are taking each day and how you store the herbs.
There are approximately 50 x 1/2 tsp serves in a 100g jar; if you are taking more or less than those quantities then adjust the math accordingly.
Our herbs have a shelf life of two years. We recommend using them within about six months once opened unless you take care to store them in a well-sealed container in the freezer, in which case they should last the full two years once opened.
They do not go 'off' - rather, the potency of the herbs decreases with exposure to air and light. We also find our herbs are very sensitive to humidity so please keep them in a cool, dry place and note that each package contains a desiccant, so take care. These are made of silica and are not toxic. Sometimes they accidentally get made into smoothies - do not fear, you will not poison anyone!
Can I take your herbs if I am taking prescription medication?
For anyone taking prescription medication, we recommend consulting with your prescribing doctor or practitioner before ingesting tonic herbs or mushrooms. There is the possibility that our products will be contraindicated or even harmful, and we are unable to be across all the available pharmaceuticals and their potential interactions. Please also consider your own unique biochemistry and sensitivity before adding herbs to a pharmaceutical regime.
As a general rule, anyone on ANY blood-thinning medication should avoid reishi mushroom and products containing reishi (SHEN, Mason's Mushrooms) as reishi can cause further blood thinning. There are also possible concerns about herbs like eucommia bark and reishi if you are on blood pressure-lowering medication, as these herbs can cause blood pressure to drop. We don't recommend using Neural Nectar if you are on psychiatric medication.
Are your herbs safe to take while pregnant or breastfeeding?
We generally are confident to recommend Reishi and Eucommia Bark during pregnancy, as there is a traditional history of these herbs being used in pregnancy. Similarly, Ashwagandha is often prescribed in Ayurveda for pregnancy. Each herb's appropriateness for each individual must be assessed on the level of the individual. There is no one-size-fits-all rule that any herb is safe for everyone.
Please consult a herbalist or practitioner who can assist you if you are not confident making this decision on your own. As pregnancy is a very individual journey; your health care provider will have a more comprehensive scope of your medical history and your unique situation.
Reishi is used to fortify immunity, adaptability, and hormone health and offers the nervous system deep support. In the Eastern tradition, there is a concept of “reishi babies”, this is a beautiful peaceful quality observed in babies whose mothers took reishi during and after pregnancy.
Eucommia Bark replenishes Kidney energy and helps to build a strong and flexible skeletal structure (especially the knees and lower back); it also supports tendon and ligament health.
Our founder Mason, and his partner Tahnee used a variety of our tonic herbs and medicinal mushrooms pre-conception, during pregnancy, and post-partum with their daughter Aiya and their son, Leo. They have created a series of podcasts on the topic, sharing the herbs they used on their journey into parenthood. We recommend you tune in.
Postpartum we recommend our I Am Gaia blend and/or JING. The process of birth depletes a woman of her Qi and Blood and the herbs in the Gaia formula assist to rebuild these foundational aspects of a woman’s health. Parenting can also deplete Jing, so our JING blend can help support. For more insight into postpartum care, we recommend listening to this podcast: Thriving Postpartum with Dr Oscar Serrallach Ep#97.
The majority of our herbs are safe to use while breastfeeding; this includes the medicinal mushrooms, tonic herbs, and our JING, QI, and Gaia blends. We always suggest introducing new herbs slowly and in low doses, this allows the body to adjust and for the benefits to unfold at a pace relevant to your individual system.
We do not recommend Schizandra or MSM at this time as these herbs influence the body’s detox pathways, especially through the Liver. Mobilising toxicity while breastfeeding is not ideal. If intuitively you feel Schizandra and MSM are relevant to use at this time, please do so in small quantities or under the guidance of your health care provider.
We also do not recommend Neural Nectar while breastfeeding as mucuna, a herb present in the blend has been shown to inhibit prolactin. The study that reported this finding used men as the test subjects so the jury is still out in this regard. As a precaution, we suggest using Lion's Mane instead of Neural Nectar while breastfeeding.
Are medicinal mushrooms safe if I have candida?
Yeast and fungal overgrowth (for example, Candida albicans) in the body is a critical health issue faced by many.
Much of the time these yeast and fungal conditions are expressed in the body due to a lack of gut health, immune function, and an inability to detoxify pathogens. It is assumed by many that all edible mushrooms contribute further to this issue, however, this is a misconception when it comes to medicinal mushrooms.
By reestablishing a strong, efficient, and intelligent immune system, you dramatically enhance your capacity to bring that infection under control. Medicinal mushrooms are the most efficient food source of the building blocks of your immune system, and they contribute to this by boosting bone marrow secretion rates, enhancing natural killer cell function, contributing to immunological adaptability, and feeding systemic immunity via the high polysaccharide content of medicinal mushrooms.
Time and time again medicinal mushrooms such as Reishi, Chaga, Lions Mane, and Cordyceps have proven to be a powerful addition to the diet for those working to overcome candida overgrowth.
How do I remove the labels from my jars?
We have been working hard over the last few years to make this as simple a process as possible. Hopefully, you get an easy label, and you can just peel it off. If not, follow the steps below.
Peel off your label as well as you can. Soak it in hot water. Don't worry if there are bits left over. The recipe below will get them off! When it’s soaked overnight, grab a scourer of some kind and mix up equal parts baking soda (bicarb) and cooking oil. Use about 1 Tbs of each for a standard jar.
Next, rub the paste on the jar. Leave for 30 minutes or so. Rub with an abrasive scrubbie (we love eco coconut scrubs). Wash well in soapy water. Reuse or repurpose your Miron!
Why have my herbs gone hard?
SuperFeast extracts can be a little bit precious if there is humidity in the air, this is due to the fact that we don’t use excipients or fillers.
If any moisture does get into your products, you may find that the powders can end up clumpy or hard, especially if you’re not using them every day. All the more reason to use your herbs daily!
If your herbs do clump or solidify, rest assured that they are fully extracted and are still perfectly fine to use as per expiry, although just a little more difficult to work with, we get it, it’s annoying!
If your herbs have not completely solidified, we encourage you to give your jar or bag a really good shake. The motion of shaking will help to break any clumps allowing your product to become a smooth, fluffy powder again. We find this works a treat.
If your herbs have completely solidified and no amount of shaking is gonna budge the solid mass, please send through the order number you purchased your product/s under and photo of the solidified product/s inside your jar or bag. Once we receive these, we will happily remedy the issue for you.

Where are your herbs sourced from?
We work primarily with Daoist tonic herbs and therefore source all our medicinal mushrooms and tonic herbs from the pristine mountain regions of China and its surrounds (Tibet, Inner Mongolia). We do so as this is the spiritual homeland or original place of the herbs we love to work with.
Sourcing in this way is a method called Dì Dào (地道), a practice deeply rooted in tradition and respect for the herb and the land it grows on. You can read more about Dì Dào (地道) on our blog.
Our Ayurvedic herbs are sourced with the same intention, Dì Dào (地道) from the regions of India known for robust production of these herbs.
See our Sourcing Map.
What is Dì Dào (地道)?
We only source the finest, most potent, and robust herbal extracts nature can provide, these are the herbs we take ourselves and share with our families, friends, and you, our beloved customer. To do this we go straight to the source, the areas where the tradition of tonic herbalism and lore are established and deeply rooted.
We source Dì Dào (地道), an ancient practice that loosely translates to sourcing something from its “original place” or “spiritual homeland”, a method that results in a product that is both full-spectrum and medicinally robust. We want our JING blend to actually have ‘Jing’ (as in Essence) in it! We source traditionally harvested herbs (this includes medicinal mushrooms) from the pristine natural regions of China and surrounds.
Our founder Mason Taylor, works intimately with the independent farmers who nourish and care for these beautiful and potent tonic herbs. Mason has personally observed the practices these individuals employ, walking alongside the farmers and foragers, witnessing firsthand their methodologies that are deeply grounded in tradition, ritual, sustainability, and respect for the land.
Are your herbs certified organic?
Our herbs are not certified organic.
We prefer to source medicinal mushrooms and tonic herbs that have been traditionally grown as per Dì Dào (地道). Dì Dào (地道) is an ancient practice that loosely translates to sourcing something from its 'original place' or 'spiritual homeland,' a method that results in a product that is robust, potent, and medicinally sound.
We want our JING blend to actually have Jing (Essence) in it! We believe herbs sourced Dì Dào (地道) surpass the reductionist approach outlined in the organic certification criteria.
Our love of tonic herbalism was born through our keen study and exploration of the traditional Daoist herbal system, and we feel Dì Dào (地道) herbs offer a medicinal profile that is directly aligned with the initial reverence placed on these potent tonic herbs.
We prefer to work with independent farms whose methods are aligned with our 'earth-friendly' ethos, where growing practices nourish the land and follow the lineage of the herbal lore. We're not so keen on supporting large umbrella companies as these operations are generally business-driven with the focus placed on market profitability as opposed to traditional herbalism. This is just the nature of their structure and incentive; we're glad they exist, as the market demands these kinds of products. Generally, products with an organic certification have more security in regards to shelf sales than those that are grown via traditional practices, so it is in the interest of these companies to hand out organic certifications to the farms that work under their business structure.
For SuperFeast to become certified organic, it would mean that each time we wanted to bring in a small amount of herb from a new farmer, we would have to pay a certifier to go to each individual farm, a process which is not financially feasible for us at this time.
Our independent farmers are independent; they don't have a large company overseeing and directing them and handing out certifications. For example, our reishi farmer, Mr. Lee, has been farming reishi for 20 years and has also been teaching others in the village how to grow Di Dao reishi. We have been purchasing Mr. Lee's top stock, as well as some of his local students'. We want to support this independent industry that is working to empower the local village and keep the tradition of tonic herbalism alive.
Right now, we are allocating our resources towards sourcing quality herbs and thorough in-house and independent third-party testing in alignment with TGA and FDA standards.
Are your herbs grown with pesticides?
Our herbs are grown Dì Dào (地道), in environments completely free of pesticides, whether wild-sourced or cultivated. Many of our herbs are grown in permaculture-style conditions, where the wild ecology of the land flourishes, allowing the herbs to prosper within their seasonal rhythms. There is absolutely no need for the introduction of chemicals of any kind into these settings that mimic the wild; the intelligence of companion planting keeps things in check.
Our test results confirm this, with results showing a zero reading of pesticides for each of our products every single time. See our FAQ on product testing.
Are your herbs irradiated?
Our herbs are not irradiated. We specialise in 10:1 herbal extract powders, this means that our products do not need to be irradiated upon entry into Australia. Generally raw herbs will require this measure to eliminate any live spores present in the raw material.
Do you use the fruiting body or mycellium in your mushroom products?
First, let's break down the difference between the fruiting body and the mycelium. The mycelium is the actual living network of the fungus, the portion of the herb that in nature moves through the ground and the wood to help the mushroom spread (mycelium is a lot like a plant's roots, and in fact has a symbiotic relationship with many root systems in natural environments). The fruiting body is the mushroom's reproductive structure, its way of birthing new life (you could do as far as to say it's the mushroom's genitals!). It is the bit most of us would recognise as the mushroom proper, that is, the bit that sticks out of the tree or pops out of the ground.
The fruiting body of most mushrooms contains most of the medicinal compounds, including (depending on the species) beta-glucans, betulinic acid, triterpenoids, and more. Research shows these compounds are present at a much higher level than those found in the mycelium.
Mycelium serves its purpose more so as a prebiotic substance. Mycelium is high in polysaccharides, which also benefit the immune system. The growing medium - what the mushroom eats - is extremely important to the quality of the compounds produced by either the fruiting body or the mycelium. The wood the mushroom grows on lends its biochemistry to the mushroom and this, in turn, creates some of the medicine we imbibe when we eat the mushroom extract. This is why, at SuperFeast, we do not love grain-grown mushrooms!! Trees are full of potent medicine and the mushroom harvests this and concentrates it in the fruiting body. Buy your mushrooms grown on wood, please!
Thanks to modern advancements in scientific research, we know both the mycelium and fruiting body have merit regarding health and healing. However, we prefer to use the fruiting body for our medicinal mushroom herbal extract powders as this is the portion of the mushroom that has been used as a medicinal throughout the Daoist tonic herb tradition, the system from which we derive our inspiration for SuperFeast.
We feel the actions of the fruiting body are superior to those of the mycelium, however, this is not the argument we choose to focus on when comparing the two parts of the mushroom. It is not so much about the efficacy of mycelium, but rather the modern sourcing and processing of this mushroom medium.
In the industry today, most mycelium products are cultivated in laboratories and fed on a cereal medium, usually rice or grain (it's very difficult to extract mycelium from wood).
There is currently no approved test to measure the beta-glucan content present in a medicinal mushroom, so the beta-glucan content of these products are often falsely recorded. Producers are unable to distinguish the actual percentage of beta-glucans present in the mushroom; measurements are instead recorded to show the mushrooms' total polysaccharide level instead.
This reading is misleading as tests are unable to identify the starches (polysaccharides and beta-glucans) that are produced by the cereal growing medium (such as grain and rice) and those produced by the actual mushroom mycelium that is ingesting the grain. This has led to a high volume of medicinal mushroom products circulating throughout the market that are not what they say they are.
The FDA does not classify mycelium as a mushroom and specifies it cannot be sold as such. If mycelium is used, it must be clearly labeled and CANNOT reference any clinical research that refers to the fruiting body.
Which of your herbs do you source wild?
As of February 2022, we source the following herbs wild:
- Turkey Tail
- Chaga
- Some of our schisandra
- Rhodiola
- Eleuthero
- Albizzia
- Polygala
These herbs are currently sustainable for us to source wild, and we are confident that they are being harvested in such a way that is protective to their natural habitats. If it were to become apparent that our sourcing of these herbs was no longer sustainable, we would move to cultivation or remove them from our offerings. This has happened once before, with dendrobium stem and Cistanche deserticola, which in 2021 we discovered were on the CITES endangered species list. We removed them from our formulations.
Why do you use cultivated CS-4 cordyceps instead of wild cordyceps?
We primarily work with the fruiting bodies as opposed to the mycelium for all our medicinal mushrooms, however, we do have one exception: Cordyceps.
Wild cordyceps (C. sinensis) are rare and extremely expensive to source. Fully wild cordyceps consist of a blade-like mushroom body growing from the head of a caterpillar. In China, they commonly call this mushroom “winter worm’ or “summer grass” so you get the idea! Due to the prohibitive cost of wild cordyceps, the Chinese developed a cordyceps mycelium which they now grow in liquid fermentation tanks. This pure mycelium product is known as Cs-4 and this is what we use at SuperFeast.
A large body of research has demonstrated that Cs-4 has a similar medicinal profile and active compounds found in wild cordyceps. Several years of compositional analysis, as well as clinical trials, have demonstrated that Cs-4 acts medicinally in a manner consistent with that of wild-harvested cordyceps.
The term Cs-4 translates to mean the 4th strain of the cordyceps mycelium. Many strains of cordyceps mycelium have been researched and scientists have found that only the 4th strain of the cordyceps mycelium could be grown using liquid cultivation methods. This method produces effective levels of all the active compounds found in the fruiting body of wild cordyceps.
The Cs-4 Cultivation Process
Cordyceps Cs-4 is cultivated via liquid fermentation and is produced using the following method:
- A bioreactor (an enclosed stainless steel tank) is half-filled with water and added nutrients (organic rice). This solution is then cooked for a period of time, usually around 3-4 hours, until a nutritious broth is created.
- The solution is sterilised and allowed to cool. At this point of the cultivation process, a piece of living cordyceps Cs-4 mycelium is added to the tank. The broth is stirred, and the carbon dioxide is vented out. The mycelium uses the liquid broth as the nutrition in which to grow off.
- It takes 48 - 72 hours for the Cs-4 mycelium to consume all the nutrients in the tank and reach maturation, at which point the Cs-4 mycelium is filtered out, dried, and then extracted, in the same way as all our other products.
Why don't you dual-extract lion's mane?
At SuperFeast we’re are inspired by the traditions that were laid down by the ancient Daoist Tonic Herbalists, those who walked this path long before we did. These masters of herbal wisdom primarily worked with the fruiting body of Lion’s Mane, prepared using water extraction. This is why we use this preparation method for our SuperFeast Lion’s Mane.
Through our work with SuperFeast we have seen many people improve their mental and cognitive performance, heal nerve injuries, gut issues, improve mood and immunity, and other unexpected positive outcomes such as healing tinnitus and restless leg syndrome using our water extracted Lion’s Mane, and for this reason, we stand by the medicinal potency of our product 100%.
The study of mushrooms is an ever-evolving and interesting space. One where new discoveries are constantly unfolding as science explores this ever-expanding terrain, sometimes colliding with traditional lore. Primary studies using the aqueous extract of Lion’s Mane have shown it to support brain health and be beneficial in the regeneration of nerve tissue. We are not against the use of alcoholic extracts of Lion’s Mane, nor are we against the use of Lion’s Mane mycelium.
However, these are avenues we choose not to specialise in. We strongly encourage all individuals on the path of sovereign health to follow their innate wisdom and explore all avenues of interest, making their own minds up along the way. We’ll be here doing the same, rocking our SuperFeast style, always happy to support and connect with you whatever path you may choose.
Where/ how is your deer antler sourced?
Our Deer Antler is extracted from Cervus nippon deer bred in Heilongjiang province in China. It is made from the tips of deer antlers that have not been ossified. Deer antler velvet is harvested from stags when their antlers are soft and rich with nutritional components like minerals, amino acids, vitamins, and enzymes. In the Spring, antlers naturally grow at an astounding rate of almost 2 cm a day. At approximately day 60 of the growing cycle, the free-range deer are gathered together and the antlers are harvested under the supervision of licensed and trained veterinarians. Tourniquets and anaesthetics are used to make sure the deer are not hurt in the process of removal. After a few days, when it has been determined that the animals are all in good health, the deer are returned to range free for the remainder of the year. The deer are NOT raised for meat; they are too valuable as a source of deer antler velvet and are deeply revered in China.
Once harvested the deer antler is freeze-dried and sliced into thin wafers. These thin slices are processed into our potent and full-spectrum extract. We only do full-spectrum extractions because we believe nature constructs the products to a state of perfection concerning active ingredients. When you take a natural product like deer antler and try to boost the levels of one or two of the 'active ingredients,' you may be getting the intelligence of the product, but you may be leaving behind the wisdom. We source and process herbs as close to nature as possible, in their potent, nutrient-rich, non-toxic, full-spectrum glory.

How does referring a friend work?
Gift $20, Get $20
It's as simple as that! We love sharing herbs with our own friends and family so here's something to help you spread the love with yours.
Give your friends $20 off their first purchase of $100 or more and receive 400 loyalty points (equiv $20) straight in your account after each successful referral.
[Click HERE to refer a friend!]
Please note:
A successful referral is one where your friend successfully makes their first purchase using their $20 discount via their referral email.
Referred friends must be a first time customer in order for both of you to receive the referral rewards.
I’ve referred several friends but haven’t received any points for it. Is there something else I need to do?
Thank you so much for sharing us with your friends! We really appreciate it.
Referred friends must be a first time customer in order for both of you to receive the referral rewards. In addition, the referral must be initiated through our rewards referral box on your personal rewards page or through the use of your unique referral link also found there.
Points will be added to your account as soon as your friend completes their first purchase on our website.
When this happens you will receive an email letting you know that one of your referrals made a purchase using your code and that a reward was added to your account. You can also check your ‘Rewards History’ to see a list of any points that you have received for referrals.
I should have earned points for a purchase/incentive but I didn’t see my account balance change?
The first thing to note is that there may be a delay in our systems communicating and points could take anywhere from minutes to several hours to appear in your account.
Double-check you were signed into your rewards account and didn’t accidentally check out as a guest. You must be logged in when making purchases to earn points.
However, if you feel like you have earned points but they are not showing up in your account you can also troubleshoot it with these tricks:
- Try to refresh your browser.
- Try to log out and then back into your account.
- Check your ‘Rewards history’ in your Rewards account to see if the points were added without you realising it. Your ‘Rewards history’ will show you the number of points earned, how and when they were earned, as well as any redemptions of points made on your account.
If you still feel like your points balance is not accurate you can contact team@superfeast.com.au and we will look into the issue for you.
I received an error message when referring friends through the email referral box. What went wrong?
I received an error message when referring friends through the email referral box. What went wrong?
We are sorry to hear that. There are a couple of scenarios that could have triggered the error message.
The first possible scenario is that there was a mistype in one of the email addresses that you entered or you forgot to put commas between multiple emails to separate them.
To eliminate confusion over what occurred, we recommend that you go back and enter each email address one at a time, clicking ‘send’ after each one rather than uploading them all at once.
If you are still having problems using the email referrals we recommend using your unique referral link or sharing the referral through Facebook, Twitter, or Messenger to receive credit. Please contact team@superfeast.com.au if you need further assistance.
